Preparations are well underway for the second annual St. Catharines Wing Fest. “We are looking at opportunities to add more flavour to the event” says festival organizer, Jeff McGuffin. Last year, the festival drew crowds to Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie to sample a multitude of chicken wings and listen to live music: “we’ve had amazing feedback on local live entertainment and this year we extended the hours on Sunday until 6 p.m.”
Also new this year will be the Wing Fest Ping Pong Tournament, which will be ongoing throughout the festival. There are also some updates to the wing eating contest on Sunday afternoon, “we changed the format a bit, we partnered with Pepper Palace, they have a new suicide sauce, so they will be providing the hot,” says McGuffin.
Wing Fest will be the first major event held at Lakeside Park in 2017, which has been flooded for most of the year. This year’s vendors include: Romby’s, Wrigley’s, The Manhattan, Cat’s Caboose, Roberto’s Pizza Passion, Redline BBQ, and last year’s champions, Kully’s.
Live entertainment will include local acts Bad Parenting, Katey Gatta, Probable Fog, Berger Blake and Goold, Charles J. Hunk, Barbarosa, Know, Knife the Wolf, Eric Conlon, DRFTR, Beth Moore, Joel Van Vliet, and Majora.
It’s about more than just wings, though, according to McGuffin, “we are running this event to help support Community Care of St. Catharines and Thorold. They do phenomenal things in this community. We hope to build this event to create a sustainable source of funding for them.”
Chicken wing lovers should head to Lakeside Park on Saturday, August 12, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Parking is limited, patrons are encouraged to consider carpooling, walking, biking, or public transit.
