The Just Ripe: Ravine Redcoat

February is now among us so you can give yourself a high five to completing your almost dry January or getting a months use out of that gym membership that you can now let start collecting dust in your wallet. Let’s face it New Year’s Resolutions are difficult and we should be focusing on less ‘life changing’ goals that are easily obtainable. Here’s my suggestion to help you drink better in 2019 with local and affordable wine from right here in Niagara.

Start by heading over to Ravine Winery is St Davids NOTL and trying out the 2017 Sand & Gravel Redcoat. It’s an everyday, any meal kind of wine that will pair with slow and lazy Mondays and wild Friday night dinners. Its colour is a deep purple with a bright ruby rim. It smells like red and black berry fruit, full of aromas like cherry and plum drizzled with dark chocolate and sprinkled with warm baking spices. It’s full of flavour but is medium bodied which makes it a very versatile wine for many different meals…and a reliable wine to have as a house staple. Its tannins are pretty and fairly soft making it enjoyable to drink right now and a wine you don’t have to make a year long commitment too in order to increase its enjoyment. At $19.95 a bottle you won’t be breaking the bank to support local wineries and filling your glass with a delicious berry blast. Not to mention Ravine Winery practices organic and biodynamic farming so your foot print won’t grow with this sustainable purchase and you can check off another New Year’s Resolution to be less of a negative impact on our planet, so relax and drink up.

This is a red wine made from a blend of 5 different varieties, 42% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and a surprising 1% Gamay its spice notes come from the 9 months it spent aging in French Oak barrels. As a matter of fact I like this wine so much…it was what we served on NYE at our wedding reception. I can say for a fact that there is a guaranteed %100 chance of a good time with this wine! Which I guess makes it a romantic wine….and maybe the perfect thing to enjoy this Valentines day while you’re getting your romance on.
