With so many things happening in downtown St. Catharines, we wanted to share another list of spots that far too often fly under the radar!
The Film House
Location: 250 St. Paul St. (Bottom floor of the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre)
While the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre has a continual flow of patrons attending the theatre, Niagara symphony, and live music, on the ground floor of the building is The Film House. This downtown cinema offers a wide range of films you won’t often find at the Pen Centre theatre, paired with movie classics. Constantly expanding its programming, to host Q&A documentaries, monthly outdoor movies throughout the summer, and locally produced films, such as Jarico Film’s Fight. The Film House has also become a staple partner with community initiatives, such as the Brock University Film Society and the Celebration of Nations Festival to offer space to showcase the role of film to creative and political expression.
Recommendation: Consider getting a membership to The FIlm House, where you can get reduced price on tickets and integrate alternative cinema into your regular movie-going routine.
Location: 80 St. Paul St.
Not far from the Ontario and St. Paul intersection, you will find Taibah. This Mediterranean restaurant offers both sit-down and take out options, with an necessary affordable option that will absolutely fill you up. Whether stopping by for quick Shawarma wrap, sitting down for a falafel plate, or picking up baklava for a family dinner, you will not be disappointed.
Recommendation: For your next potluck, event, or family dinner, order trays of rice, falafel, salad, hummus, and more.
Niagara Artists Centre (NAC)
Location: 354 St. Paul St.
For folks already connected to the arts community, the Niagara Artists Centre (NAC) and all of its programming have become somewhat is an institution. Whether it is there ongoing artists’ exhibits, hosting local bands, or partnering on community events, the NAC is a space driven by by promoting local work. Each year, the NAC plays host to Small Feats, a community art show showcasing the wide range of creativity within our city. Another great community initiative connected to the NAC, is the NAC Studio/ Shop. Partnered with local vendors Roly Poly Records, the NAC Studio/ shop is located across the road, towards Geneva Street (433A St. Paul St.). This space offers a storefront, with significant space for artists’ studios.
Recommendation: Plan ahead for the summer rooftop shows and dance parties.
Seoul Korean Cuisine
Location: 249 St. Paul St.
Just to the right of Mahtay, you will find a doorway to Seoul Korean Cuisine. While Seoul is consistently rated one of the best Korean stops in St. Catharines, far too often this local spots flies under the radar. With an affordable menu and options for a wide range of dietary needs, this will easily become your default favourite.
Recommendation: A kimchi pancake, followed by veggie, tofu, or chicken, beef, or pork hot stone (dolsot) bibimbap.
